ハッピーという名前の服はなんでしょう? (What's "happy"?)

アメリカ人の同僚の小学生の子供さんが日本語で算数を勉強している(公立小学校にて)という話は書いたが、先日、彼女が日本文化大好きの娘さんに「ハッピー服」を買ったと私に教えてくれた。 My colleague whose daughter is learning Japanese told me she bought a "happy" for her daughter. ハッピー??? Happy (pronounced more like hoppy)???? な、なんと、日本で祭りのときに着る「はっぴ」のことでした。 She actually meant a happi that we wear for festivals in Japan. 英語喉でも説明してますが、英語では子音、母音、子音で1シラブルになります。 はっぴ だと日本語ではHAーPIというかんじですが、英語では HAP-PIYとなります(最初のAはアで読む)。 In Japanese, Hapi is pronouned HA-PI (or HA-PPI with a small "tsu"), but in English, […]
